Wendy Aslett Memorial Trophy - Pas De Deux
Have you been lucky enough to be the recipient of the Wendy Aslett Memorial Trophy? Ever wondered what the story was behind it?
The Wendy Aslett Memorial Trophy is for the winners of the Pas De Deux, awarded at the ARCA Spring Challenge each year. This trophy was donated to ARCA by Kelmscott Adult Riding Club (KARC) in 2010 in memory of Wendy Aslett, one of the founding members of the club.
Wendy embodied what adult riders is all about - she was horse mad, often nervous under instruction, always willing to pitch in and determined to have a go. Wendy learned to ride as an adult, and until her late 50's the only horse she had ever ridden was Beau, the horse she brought to rallies who was still going strong in his late 20's. She was very supportive and encouraging and could often be heard yelling her best words of encouragement ("man up") or her highest praise ("showoff") in her broad Yorkshire accent at each riders personal achievements. Wendy was incredibly funny, a great presence in the club and very welcoming to new members.
Wendy loved creating freestyle tests and dressing up. She attended numerous challenges, always entering the Pas De Deux as well as the Quadrille. Memorable costumes included ABBA, scottish highlander, summer holidaymaker and a Christmas elf! She was instrumental in encouraging KARC;s high participation rate at the dressage challenges. She loved the club and attending rallies and ARCA Challenges. When Wendy passed suddenly from complications from heart surgery in October 2009 at just 60, KARC was devastated.
The club decided to donate a perpetual trophy to ARCA to be awarded to the winners of the Pas De Deux each year, as it was Wendy's favourite event not just to ride in, but also to watch and cheer everyone on. For many members KARC was never the same without Wendy, but they hoped that her trophy would keep her memory alive.
